Preschool Fall Craft Ideas for Toddlers and Children

A great big thank you to Melissa from Never a Dull Moment for guest blogging today and coming up with some easy and stress free preschooler fall craft ideas that you can do with your children at home!

I love fall, it is honestly my favorite season and who can resist the beautiful changing leaves? Lexie is loving the change of the seasons too; and now with the growing curiosity that comes with being a 3 year old I never know what is coming in the house.



why not use the pine cones as a pretty center piece? Her current favorite is pine cones and apples, which made picking a few fall crafts to start off the season with quite easy. We washed some dirt off a few of the apples, I cut them in half, and we did apple stamps. I'll be honest, for as much as she loves to paint I expected this to be a much bigger hit then it was!
 

 I love the hand print, foot print, (and ever finger printing) paintings; and Lexie's so used to them she knows when we do one we have to do one for each set of Grandparents. Though I must say the attention span of Lexie did not last this activity.
 
 I looked at some interesting leaf painting ideas and thought why not let her just paint on the leafs? She thought this was awesome! But as dead leaves do they died, and didn't last long.  

 There are a few more we will definitely be making, such as the handshaped wreath and the leaf candle holder! Looking for more toddler friendly fall crafts?

Easy Easter Crafts for Toddlers

A HUGE thank you to Melissa from Never a Dull Moment for guest posting for me today! She's a crafty mama with a knack for children's activities, especially around the holidays! Enjoy some Easter toddler crafts!!

For the past month or so I've perused Pinterest and searched Google for some options Easter craft options for Lexie {2 1/2 years old}. There are many out there as I'm sure most of you know, but some of them are a little complex, some a little tacky to me; and some well I couldn't do them on my own no less with my toddler "helping"! Then I found a few I could do, and a few I knew we'd enjoy. 

We did the turkey hands at Thanksgiving, the Santa hat's at Christmas, and the loVe at Valentines day; so it was no surprise that I found a hand-print/footprint craft I loved. 

1. The foot-chick 

Lexie is so used to having her hands and feet painted she actually request's it now. This one was nice and easy though I will admit we called Dada in to assist when she tried to run around with a painted foot. We used a yellow finger paint, let it set over night then I added the eye, beak, and feet the next day. Makes a great gift for the Grandparents, or the front of an Easter card to family. 

2. Striped Easter Egg

This one was a lot of fun, with only a little prep work I cut pieces of colored paper we had on hand, and placed double sided tape on one side of the strips. Then took a white piece of paper and had Lexie lay them out covering the entire paper. Next, I took a second piece of white paper (we used card-stock)  and cut an egg shape out of the middle {this was honestly the hardest part for me, I won't mention the numerous time I had to re-cut it}. Then you adhere the top to the bottom, I simply taped them together. 

 3. Chalkboard Eggs
At first thought you may not think Chalkboard eggs are a good toddler craft but if you give me a moment I'll explain. First the prep.

I'll be honest, I've never used Chalkboard paint and was wondering if I would ruin the thought of it by starting with this project. However, that wasn't the case at all; I honestly looked around the room after I did the eggs thinking of what else I could paint! The directions call for two coats, painted an hour apart, one vertically, one horizontally. For the eggs I only did one coat but I did apply it thick and allowed it 12 hours to sit. Then I showed Lexie...

The paint is very forgiving (and yes, I painted the paper plate too- told you I was looking for "things"!)  Lexie really enjoyed drawing on them, and she cracked quite a few and you wouldn't know it unless you felt it!

Mama Moments: Be Good...to Yourself

A new series...who knows how often, but I'm shooting for the second Monday of the month. A monthly series...Mama Moments

A chance for you to get to know me as a mom.

I recently went out for my monthly MNO (Mama's Night Out) with two girlfriends who have 6 month olds.

First and foremost, if you don't do an MNO but have mom friends...do it! it's such a refreshing little break, if only for a drink, dessert or {who am I kidding} a full meal that I can eat from start to finish...with it still being hot!

Anywho...I went out for our MNO, and we talked about some nitty-gritty stuff. Post-Partum Depression was a theme, as was me-time, diaper changes, solid feeding, transition to bottles and pretty much every other topic three first time mom's can chat about in 3 hours.

I was thinking about this post the entire way home and wanted to get up on the roof and scream

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE, MAMA!

We sacrifice so much of ourselves as mom's, that really...what is left for us at the end of the day? Who is there to take care of us? When do we ever give ourselves a break?

WAHM's - tap a nap, and don't feel guilty about it

SAHM's - flick on a movie and snuggle up on the couch with your little one

Downtime is so incredibly important and I'm finding that more and more mom's don't take it. I know I'm totally guilty on not taking it until I'm at my breaking point and in tears, needing a break.

But, what good are we unless we are good to ourselves first, and others second? Who are we able to love, unless we love ourselves? How can we give others compassion and our attention unless we first give it to ourselves?

I've been thinking long and hard since April 5th about this new mantra, and it has completely resonated with me.

Be Good...to Yourself.

So you go on with your bad self! Have an ice cream date with a group of mama friends and talk tirelessly about sleep deprivation, being WAHM's, having kiddos in daycare, solid feeding, being a SAHM, being a working-mom.

Go bowling, to the movies, to the spa {ahhhh....}.

Be you.

And be good to you!

Talk-To-Me Tuesday: Unda The Sea...

Unda the sea...Each little snail here...Know how to wail here...That's why it's hotter...Unda the water...Ya we in luck here...Down in the muck here...Unda the sea

One of the awesome parties that I'm working on has an Under The Sea theme, and I couldn't be more excited about it! P's mama and I have been back and forth by email and twitter with ideas, and it's going to be one heck of a party!

While I won't out any of her personal ideas, or the items that will be coming from Sweet Stella's. I'll post some sneak peeks later, but trust me...super fun ideas!

Here are some really great ideas if you're going to be doing the Under The Sea theme this year!

An awesome invitation goes a very long way! This one happens to be amazing and hits on all of the graphic design points that I look for in an invitation.

Think about things in sets of 3...three colours, three design elements (font, graphic, pattern)

Compositionally, things look better when paired in uneven groupings. If you have a rectangular table, consider putting three of these together in a row on your table

Fishbowls full of blue jello and with a few sweedish fish floating in their little gooey home! So awesome, and incredibly easy!

Talk-To-Me Tuesday: Carrot Pancakes

Lately, I've been wracking my brain about how to get more veggies into my son. He simply just will not eat them...unless they're sweet potato fries.

So...being creative, I wondered if he'd mind carrots grated into his pancakes. Boy oh boy! Did we have a winner here!!

• 1
  cup all-purpose flour
• 1
  tablespoon sugar
• 2
  teaspoons baking powder
• 1/4
  teaspoon salt
• 1
  beaten egg
• 1
  cup milk
• 2
  tablespoons cooking oil
• 3 large carrots, grated (about 1/2 to 3/4 cup)
  

Preheat skillet, griddle, frying pan...whatever your cooking method.

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Beat egg with milk and cooking oil, then stir into dry ingredients until combined and not lumpy. Make sure to not overmix.

Mix in carrots.

Cook on your griddle, turning when bubbles pop and don't fill back in.

Serve! I served mine plain, no syrup required!

Yield is about 8-10 pancakes, and they freeze really well in a Ziploc bag! To reheat, simply pop in the toaster!

By working every spare minute I have!! I have 1 daughter in school and another in nursery 3 days a week so I sew while the house is empty, then again once they are in bed.



What do you see as your greatest challenge being a MOMpreneur?

Balancing my time; I try not to sew as much at weekends but that's when my craft fairs tend to be and during the run up to Christmas I need to sew everyday.

What advice do you have for other moms looking to start a business?

Do something you enjoy as well as something you are good at. There is nothing worse than starting something and then realising you are hating every minute of it. And spread the word! Talk to mums in the school playground; I have stalls at my daughter's school Christmas and Summer Fairs and get orders throughout the year as a result.

Mama Blogger Monday: Peanut's Tale

Another Monday, another mama blogger to feature and one who I knew as a mama before I knew she was a blogger!

Meet Shaun, the mama over at Peanut's Tale - a chronicle about her adorable daughter, Paige.

Why do you blog?

I started blogging during my pregnancy with Paige. It was an outlet and it seemed that everyone on The Bump blogged, so I figured why not? I used to talk about my pregnancy, getting ready for baby. Then when Paige arrived, it was used to remind myself about the little things she did - her first car ride, the battle of breast feeding then pumping then eventually switching to formula. The struggle of finding a job, then leaving Paige with a baby sitter. I blog now because it's easier then writing down in a baby book (which is somewhere in the disaster known as our recently moved-in apartment) and I also get to share it with family and friends who do not see Paige (they live in FL, MA and CO). I have also "met" some amazing ladies through my blogging *cough, Shannon, cough*. I am one of the first of my friends to be pregnant so to have some ladies that I can talk to about kids is a great feeling! I hope to eventually meet them one day, in real life!

What inspires you?

Paige. It's easy really. I never realized I could love someone as much as I love my husband til I was pregnant with her. She was a surprise, but ohmygoodness, what an amazing surprise she has been!

Goals

I'm not really sure - I do want to continue to blog. Will I ever make it my full time job? Gosh no. But I've enjoyed doing reviews & giveaways. There have been some awesome responses and I enjoy finding new blogs through my new readers! I would like to go to BlogHer - I'd get the chance to meet some amazing women and learn on how to better my blog!

Hi! I'm Mama G from Growing Up Geeky. I am married to M - a mad scientist, and I just became a stay-at-home Mommy to my 9-month-old daughter Carina. M is an oboe playing organic chemist by day and a fearless video game dragon slayer at night. I am a former Math-lete and self-proclaimed domestic failure, and I would rather alphabetize my spice rack than go to the Mall. I think it's safe to say that our baby girl won't have a prayer at being cool.

Growing Up Geeky celebrates our quirks and outright geekiness and provides you with a healthy dose of super cute baby. I started writing in it after a few unsuccessful months of trying to conceive; I needed an outlet. Hey everyone! My name is Ashley, but for the past 3 years I've mainly gone by Momma. I don't mind the Jessie Spano reference because it sounds so darn cute when these girls say it. That's Emmy on my left & Brooklyn on my right---excuse our tea party attire.

Talk-To-Me Tuesday: Hiding Veggies

So many mama friends of mine lately have been asking how I lucked out and got such a great eater. I think alot of it has to do with the variety that I exposed Owen to early on, and my sneakiness.

By that, I mean how I hide his veggies when he seems to be turning his nose up at them. The Hiding Veggies Project started about two weeks ago when he seemed to only want to eat carbs...and by that I mean homemade bread and buns, along with eggs and cheese. Pretty much everything else he would turn his nose up at.

Until this...



{Chicken, Broccoli and Cheese Omelette}



2 eggs
splash of milk
freshly ground pepper

Cook as an omelette and...

Fill with:
2tbsp cut grilled chicken
2tbsp steamed broccoli
2tbsp shredded cheddar cheese




And yes...he ate the entire thing!

Whenever you're having trouble getting fruits or veggies to your kiddo, it's usually time to pull a switch up. Create something new...an omelette, casserole, mix them with a favourite sauce (Owen especially enjoys veggies loaded into homemade pasta sauce)...heck! Even mix them into muffins! Carrot muffins, apple spice, cranberrry lemon! The possibilities are endless, and your kiddo may just develop a new favourite!

'The Froggy and the Mouse?' you ask ... what's with that name? My blog is aptly named after my two boys' nicknames ... the Mouse is my oldest (3 years) and squeaked so much when he was born that we immediately thought of a tiny little mouse. The Froggy is my youngest (6 months) and kicked SO hard and SO much when I was pregnant with him that he earned his nickname before he was even born ... and he still continues to be a mover and a shaker!

I blog about my kids, and being a somewhat (okay REALLY) imperfect mom. I take a lot of photos, I do a lot of organizing, I write a little (lol). Mama Blogger Monday: City Mom

Today is one that I have been waiting for, with patient anticipating, for a little while. I met Kelly from City Mom a while back through twitter...one of the many that my lovely husband recommended that I reach out and connect with in our community and boy, am I ever glad that I did!

Kelly is fantastic, and is showing what it's like to be a mom in the city, living in a high rise and enjoying a downtown lifestyle with her ridiculously-super-cute daughter. They have such a positive outlook on life, and I am thrilled to be able to share City Mom with you all today.

City Mom began over a year ago as a means for me to document the ups and downs of raising a child in an urban setting. When my husband and I decided to move from the suburbs to a downtown high-rise condo we saw some raised eyebrows. There was no better way to form a rebuttal than documenting it through a blog.

Who says raising a family means you have to a plot of property with a front and back yard and a white picket fence? We feel we can make a happy home for our daughter in an urban setting with a diverse landscape and many cultural opportunities.

City Mom has since turned into so much more. You’ll find topics such as women’s health, parenting, cooking and baking and product reviews and giveaways. Why I Blog and What Inspires Me...

I started blogging to chronicle my first year of motherhood. The first few months I could barely remember my own name, much less my daughter's first month stats, so I figured if I put it all down on paper (keyboard?) I would easily have a way of looking back at all the important milestones that would surely just breeze by us. This was the best decision I have ever made.

My blog gives me a space to brag, vent, complain and most importantly interact with other mamas. I am inspired by every mother who makes it through the day in one piece. Seriously, no one ever warns you how hard it will be to go through one day with a newborn, that includes a shower, food, brushing your teeth and remembering that you have a husband that you should be nice to. I LOVE reading "Mama Blogs". It makes me feel normal, not crazy, and that I am not alone in my everyday struggles. Logging onto Blogger is seriously the best part of my work day (just don't tell my boss that). My now one year old is the star of our lives with a personality that amazes us every single day.

I am so happy to have the opportunity to write about her all I want and that people actually read it. (ok, ok, I have 20 followers, but still. I love every one of them).

Mama Blogger Monday; Building Our Story

Happy Monday everyone!!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to my beautiful friend Censie, from Building Our Story. Censie and I met while we were both trying-to-conceive and had everything baby related on the brain.

She is such a beautiful person, inside and out. A fabulous mama to her son Jude, a wonderful wife to her awesome hubs Jeremy.

My name is Censie (said like Kenzie) ;) I first started our blog when I was bored at work. I decided I wanted to start some sort of journal. So I did this for awhile and then it turned into our Trying to Concieve (TTC) blog - which then 7 months later turned into OH MY GOSH we are expecting blog!! And now it is a growing little boy blog, a weight loss blog, a baby/toddler review blog, a give-a-way blog, and much more! I continue to blog because I like sharing our story of our life with a little boy. I hope that I can keep up with blogging so when Jude is older he can look back at this blog and see what he did to our lives each day! :O) And maybe soon this blog will turn into a TTC blog again - ummm only time will tell.

I look forward to meeting new followers - I love finding other family blogs to read. Makes me feel normal most days.

Sneak Peek: Birthday Wishes Box

The first of many sneak peeks that I'll be posing over the next two weeks!!

One of the reasons that I'm taking this little break is to focus on my kiddo's 1st Birthday Party...and in that, making the hanging decor, banners, favour pouches, balloon wreath...and Birthday Wishes Box.

What is a Birthday Wishes Box, you ask? Well...it looks a little like this



The box itself is a 7.5" square recycled papier mache box, which is then covered with acid free designed paper, cardstock, stamped with acid free ink and embellished with your child's name on the top, or initial (which is raised off the surface for a three-dimensional effect).



What do you do with it?

Well...are your child's birthday party, you get the guests to write their wishes...hopes...dreams...advice for your child on pieces of paper or cardstock, put them in the box, and then give to your child on a special occaision in the future.



College graduation...moving out of the house...wedding...first baby...

So many milestones, and ones that your child will absolutely love getting this sentimental box of advice, hopes, wishes and dreams on.

How-To Tuesday: Monster Easter Basket

Well...it's that time of year when Easter is upon us! Last week, I went scouting for an Easter basket for me son.

I found alot of purple, green, yellow and pink...a few blue, but even the blue ones were sort of girly. So, I decided to make it a little DIY project!

Supplies:
Brown (or white, depending on your preference) basket with handles
Ribbon of your choice
3" Circle punch
White cardstock
Acid Free Ink in a colour that coordinates with the ribbon
Letter stamp with your child's initial
Goodies to put in the basket

Step 1:










Punch circle out of cardstock, and stamp child's initial on circle

Step 2:









Weave ribbon through the top edge of the basket, wrapping twice around the bases of the handle

Step 3:










Tie ends together. Punch hole through 3" circle and tie onto centre of basket ribbon.

Step 4:









Tie basket ribbon into a bow

Step 5:









Fill with Monster sized goodies! For us, A super cute monster, bubble wand for the summer, corn puffs, and a great little wagon with letter blocks in it (a $5 steal at Wal-Mart!) We also found a huge (3') stuffed elephant, and he went wild over it in the store...so it made its way home with us as well!
