Beginner Juice #Recipe for Moms

One thing that I really love to bring to a new mom's home following childbirth is some fresh juice. There's a lot to be said for prepping a massive jug of juice that they can pour themselves a glass from!

A photo posted by Shannon Moyer-Szemenyei (@sweetstellas) on
This juice has just four simple ingredients, but is great for breastfeeding mama's and gets a kick from some fresh lime!

To make a large 42oz jug, juice...

10 large kale leaves and stalks
10 apples, seeds and core removed
1.5 limes, green rind removed but white pith let on
8 medium carrots

Start with juicing a few of your kale leaves with an apple wedge or a carrot. You always want to follow your leafy or soft fruits with a harder fruit to ensure they get totally juiced.

With your remaining half lime, cut it into wedges and add to your juice jug.

Keep your juice in the fridge and consume within 72 hours.

Enjoy!

Carrot Ginger #juice #recipe for Breastfeeding Moms

Proper nutrition when you are breastfeeding is super important, and something that I have been doing alot of research on to help out my postpartum doula clients.

Breastfeeding didn't exactly go as planned for me, so I wanted to make sure that I had a load of knowledge in my doula toolkit...what to eat, how to create a comfortable environment, touch base with local lactation consultants etc.

One way to get amazing lactation boosting nutrients is to juice, and juicing is something that I have become pretty proficient at over the past year, so it is something that I really love to be able to provide my clients with. A fresh juice, delivered to your door? Pretty awesome.

Now, when I'm making juice for my doula clients, I usually like to make a big batch, then transfer it into a sealed pitcher that they can put in the fridge. Fresh made juices can keep 24-48 hours once chilled (max. 72 hrs)

7 apples (cored)
5 large carrots (rinsed)
3 pears (cored)
3" ginger (peeled)
1 lemon (rind removed, white pith left on)

Yes, that's a lot of produce but it will yield about 50oz of that beautiful vibrant orange juice that you see above! Since all of the ingredients are firm, the order that you push everything through your juicer doesn't really matter.

Once you've juiced everything (you may have to take a break to transfer some into your pitcher, then resume juicing), swirl it together in your pitcher then seal it up, and refrigerate.

If you're not fond of the ginger flavor, add another lemon. Lemons and apples naturally cut strong flavors when juicing, and both are great lactation boosters.

Post Vacation Recovery Juice #recipe

Chocolate
Brownies
Three birthday dinners
Carbs carbs carbs
Red meat

One thing that I couldn't wait to do when we got home from our extended Christmas Vacation was put my juicer to work and get rid of all of the junk I had put into my body. We ate out alot on vacation, and being at Disney for a few days didn't exactly help (but boy were those cherry danishes after my 10km race good! mmmm!)

1 lemon, cut in half and yellow rind removed
1 peach, cut in quarters
2 apples, cut in quarters and seeds removed
1" knob of peeled ginger
1 large handful of spinach

Start off with a chunk of apple, then alternate your spinach with apple pieces, ginger, and peach. Finish with your lemon and your last pieces of apple.

Now...this juice is crazy tart. It's kind of like drinking the healthiest, sourest lemonade ever. But! Think about the benefits! That lemon is flushing out toxins in your body. The apple is loaded with fibre and vitamin C. The peach is sweet and balances the other flavours. The ginger is great for digestion. And the spinach? Hello, Popeye! Iron!

This is a super nutrient rich juice to get you back on track after vacation has bloated your belly and added weight that you weren't exactly looking to find!

A Little Bit Of Everything #juice #recipe

So what do you do when you're at the end of your juicing supplies? Throw them all through your juicer and see what you get!

I call this my Kitchen Sink juice, and here's why...

1 tangerine
1 apple
1 pear
1 cup blueberries
2 cups carrots
1/2 lemon

Uhm...yep! All of that in one juice! Start with your softer fruits and follow with the hard ones...so, tangerine, apple, pear, blueberries and carrots. Finish off with your lemon, and then swirl!

With so many fruits and vegetables, there are just so many incredible health properties in this glass. Oh! And get a big glass...this makes about 15oz of juice!

ZING! Lemon Apple Juice #recipe #juice

Ready for a tart and tangy juice recipe?

1 apple
1 pear
1/2 lemon
1 tangerine

This recipe produces about 8oz. of juice, and is great for your immune system as well as to detox and flush your digestive system.

Start with half of your apple, follow with your tangerine, then the rest of your apple. Next, your lemon and all of your pear. Swirl and enjoy!

This juice is definitely tangy, so my preference is to just use half a lemon in this recipe. However, if you're really brave...feel free to use more!

Nectarine #juice #recipe

I was so excited to see stone fruits in the produce section this Spring and Summer! I thought I would branch out of my apple-pear-spinach-carrot-tangerine/orange/tangelo comfort zone and try something a little different.

1 nectarine
2 apples
1 cup red grapes

Rinse your grapes off well, and make sure they are all firm. I had a mushy one in the bunch and it definitely impacted the taste! Alternate your fruit, and end with a quarter of apple.

Apples are great for fiber, Vitamin A and C, and the nectarines are loaded with niacin, calcium and iron. Add in your grapes, and you have the added benefits of copper, magnesium, and vitamins B1 and B2!

Stone fruits like peaches and nectarines are great when you're having digestive issues!

Tangerine Dream #juice #recipe

Loaded with vitamin C, fiber, vitmin A and folic acid, this juice recipe is a great one for your immune system!

1 large tangerine, peeled
1 apple
1 pear
1 cup blueberries

Start by juicing half of your apple or pear, then your tangerine. Push the rest of your apple or pear through, then your blueberries. Remember to always follow a soft fruit or leafy vegetable with a hard fruit of vegetable. End with the rest of your apple or pear.

Swirl, and pour into a glass.

Tip: I love the mason jar style glasses for my juices as they naturally let the juice under the foam to the front when I tilt it. The foam on the juices isn't always the most appetizing, so I usually re-swirl at the end once it separates from the juice below, then down the hatch!

Apple Spinach Strawberry #juice #recipe

Another iron rich juice recipe, that gets balance from fiber, calcium, and vitamin C!

2 handfuls baby spinach
2 cups strawberries
2 apples

Sweet and simple, and this juice has a bit of tang from the strawberries too! Start by juicing a handful of spinach, followed by a half or quarter of apple. Repeat, then juice the rest of your strawberries and apples.

Strawberries have a pretty strong flavor when they're juiced. It's nice and sweet, but can be a little tart as well so be prepared for a bit of tang!

Morning Glow #juice #recipe

Get your morning glow on with this delicious, and easy to prepare, juice recipe!

1 apple (cored)
1 nectarine (pitted)
1/2 large navel orange (peeled)
1 1/2 cups baby carrots (rinsed)

I created this recipe when I was 7months pregnant, and it quickly became a favorite. It is sweet, has great nutrients like beta carotene and folic acid, and a lovely finish with the nectarine flavor!

I pushed my juice through in the order that the ingredients are listed above, hard fruits followed by softer ones and then ending with the baby carrots.

With softer fruits or vegetables, and leafy greens too, you want to follow with harder ones to make sure that everything gets pushed through your juicer and you are getting the most out of your produce.

Core, pit, peel and rinse. Those are the only preparation steps for this recipe, which makes it a super easy one! Enjoy the benefits of all of these beautiful ingredients, and get your morning glow!

I {Heart} Kale #juice #recipe for #pickyeaters

This spring, I ventured into the world of juicing and found out that there are some really amazing ingredients that are readily available in your grocery store that you might not otherwise get into your diet.

Like...kale!

I was nervous to try it, but had heard such amazing things about juicing with kale. So...I whipped up this baby and well....the results were pretty incredible.

1 apple (cored)
1 pear (cored)
1 cup blueberries (rinsed)
1 cup strawberries (rinsed)
1 cup baby carrots (rinsed)
1 large handful kale (rinsed and dried)

I started by juicing my kale and apple, and while my juicer didn't grind and process it as much as I would have liked, I still got about 1.5oz of juice from the kale itself. Next, everything else went in the juicer.

At this point of my juicing journey (about 3 months in) my son was really interested and insisted on helping...then tasting...and drinking about 1/3 of my juice!

Knowing how much he enjoyed this juice made me really happy. He got all of that goodness in his little 1/3 portion (probably about 3-4oz), and loved it! The green mustache that he sported was pretty funny too.

Teaching your little ones about juicing is a great thing, and one that my son has really enjoyed. He likes to help push the produce through, and then give it a taste. Some he likes, and some he doesn't, but the point is that he's trying. He's a bit of a pick eater and while I'm pretty sure he could live on grilled cheese sandwiches, knowing that I can get a juice like this into him every now and again is really awesome.

I hope you love this kale juice recipe as much as we do!

Happy green mustaches!

Mighty Greens #raw #green #juice #recipe

When I was feeling sluggish around 5.5 months pregnant, I knew that my iron was probably low. It's around 20 weeks when your doctor will suggest an iron supplement, and since we hadn't gotten to that appointment just yet (it was on my list to ask) I wanted to come up with a juice recipe that would be iron rich, and delicious.

3 cups baby spinach
1 apple (cored)
1 tangerine (peeled)
3 cups baby carrots

Yes, friends...that's 9 servings of fruits and vegetables in one glass. Start with one bunch of baby spinach, followed by half an apple and half your tangerine. Then, another round of spinach, apple, tangerine and finish with all of your carrots.

The harder fruits and vegetables like carrots and apples will help push soft things like baby spinach and the tangerine flesh through the juicer to make sure you are getting the most amount of juice out of your produce.

So, this juice is packed with iron from the baby spinach, but what else are you getting? Fiber, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium...just to name a few!

Enjoy!

Berry Good #raw #juice #recipe

When berries are in season, and found locally, they are oh so sweet and perfect for juicing! This recipe packs a punch with iron rich spinach and fiber packed apple!

2 apples
2 cups blueberries (rinsed)
3 handfuls strawberries (rinsed, tops removed)
2 large handfuls baby spinach

Start by juicing your baby spinach, followed by two apple halves. This will ensure that the absolute most amount of spinach gets juiced as sometimes it gets stuck. Next, juice your berries and end with the rest of your apple.

Stir and pour into a glass. I found that this recipe made about 8-9oz of fresh juice, perfect for breakfast!

Also...there's 8 servings of fruit and veg in here! Pretty amazing!

Light Leafy Green #juice #recipe

This spring, I started experimenting with juicing different kinds of greens when I ran out of spinach in the fridge. We had a sweet baby green mix of romaine, red oak, green oak, tango, lolla rossa, red leaf, red romaine and green leaf. With just a few handfuls, and some yummy fruits, I created this recipe.

2 apples
1 pear
1 nectarine or peach
3 handfuls of mixed greens

Start by juicing a handful of your greens, followed by chunks of apple and pear. Always follow a leafy or soft ingredient with a harder one to make sure that everything is being pushed through the sieve.

Push your stone fruit through, and then end with apple and pear pieces.

Enjoy!

Juicing during #Pregnancy Volume 3 #juice #recipe #juicing

Holy moly! I've learned so much through this whole juicing journey, and have now been adding a daily, nutrient rich juice every morning for 4 and a half months!

So, what are the new things that I've learned?

I really love kale! It has such a smooth and mellow flavor, and I love how nutrient rich it is. I try to get at least two kale juices in every week to ensure I'm getting all of that goodness!

Melons are fantastic when juiced! I was hesitant to try them, but then whipped up the recipe below and was in love.

Sometimes it's best to keep it simple. Apples + strawberries, Apples + pears...keeping it to two ingredients when you're super tired and nearing the end of your pregnancy still gives you lots of good stuff from your produce, but takes the thinking out of the process.

I never in a million years thought that I would go through a 3lb bag of apples every single week. I like juicing with Empire apples the best, but am excited to try other varieties over the summer, and buy them locally at the apple farm down the road!

Now...that recipe!

3 apples
1 handful kale (approx 3-4 leaves)
2 handfuls chopped honeydew (rind removed)

Start with your kale, followed by a few pieces of apple. Then, all of your melon and follow with the rest of your apple.

This juice will come out nice and smooth, and a bright lime green color, but it is sweet and tasty! Low in calories (only about 250cal for a 12oz serving), this juice is high in copper, vitamin K, vitamin B6, vitamin A, and iron! It also has 174% of your daily serving of vitamin C and a good amount of water and fiber to aid in digestion.

Juicing during pregnancy has allowed me to have a healthy and steady weight gain. I know that all of the weight that I have gained is this Little Guy that we get to meet {very!} soon, and I also know that I've given him the most nutritious start to life that I can.

Have a healthy, happy pregnancy and enjoy your juice!

Citrus Lover #juice #recipe

Today's juice recipe is brought to you by a newfound love of citrus. Previously, I wasn't super down with citrus fruits. From the breakouts to the pulp, they just were'nt my first choice.

Enter pregnancy, and it's a whole different ballgame. Life has changed alot in the past four years (June 13th was Owen's due date!) and I'm so happy to be so much healthier now, especially during this pregnancy. Juicing has provided so many benefits, it's unreal!

1 orange
1/2 lemon
1 apple
1 pear
1 nectarine
1 handful strawberries

To prep: peel the rind from your orange and lemon, core your apple and pear, pit your nectarine, and rinse your strawberries. This sounds like alot, but it really takes under 5 minutes and the benefits far outweigh the work involved.

To juice: toss it all in and juice it! Juice it real good!

Leafy Green #juice #recipe

Good morning all! Ready to start your day with a simple green juice recipe? Here we go!

I know...you're thinking but I thought this was a green juice? It is, I swear!

1 orange
2 apples
1/2 lemon
1 pear
1 cup baby greens

The greens that you choose will impact the color of your juice. I used a sweet baby green mix that had some red lettuce and some green, hence the colour takes more queues from the other ingredients in the recipe.

Start with your greens, then follow with everything else. Swirl, and enjoy!

Dinosaur Kale #Juice #Recipe for #pickyeaters

This morning, I woke up with a sore belly and knew that there was one fix: juice.

I set off to make something a little different today. I haven't been eating alot of meat lately, then had some steak last night. BIG MISTAKE. Holy moly was my belly sore all night, and when you have a honeydew sized baby already pressing on your digestive system...yikes! It made for a very uncomfortable night.

I wanted something with protein, but also something that would calm my belly. Kale and apples would be in it...but what else?

First, let me explain the name. This is my Dinosaur Juice recipe, which my (almost) 4 year old named because it started out green then turned purple, apparently like a dinosaur. I knew it would be tasty, but definitely wasn't expecting him to want to try it.

3 large kale leaves
3 apples
1 pear
1/2 cup blackberries

Start by juicing one leaf of kale, followed by a wedge of apple or pear. Repeat until you've juiced all of your kale, then push your blackberries through, followed by the rest of your apples and pears.

Like I said, it will start off brilliantly green, then end a beautiful dark purple color.

And in terms of nutrition, you're getting loads of Copper, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and 5.14g of Protein. (along with other good things listed above!)

What I wasn't expecting was for my little dude to want a glass. I poured him about 3oz (this recipe makes about 14oz), which he promptly guzzled and then asked for more. He probably had about 6 oz. and I got the rest.

So awesome, and what a great start to his day!

Happy Juicing!

Stonefruit and Strawberries #fruit #juice #recipe

If you are just starting to juice, go with ingredients that you know and already love. Then, you will pretty much be guaranteed to start off your juicing journey on the right foot, and have a positive experience.

2 apples
1 pear
1 nectarine (or peach)
handful of strawberries

You've probably noticed by now that apples and pears are the staple in my juices. This is for a few reasons; they balance the flavours really well, keep a juice bright, provide alot of juice extraction and make for a great base. They're also easily purchased in bulk bags, and since I go through about a bag of apples a week...that's helpful on the budget!

This is an easy to prep and easy to juice recipe. Core your apples and pears, rinse your strawberries (I remove the tops, but it's not necessary) and pit your nectarine. Toss it all in the juicer and let it do its thing.

Enjoy! If you try it, let me know what you think in the comments below.

Pep{per} In Your Step #juice #recipe

This morning I created a super yummy juice recipe, that I just had to blog the recipe right away so you could enjoy it too!

2 apples (cored)
1/2 orange (peeled)
5 large strawberries (rinsed and tops removed {optional})
1/2 orange pepper (seeds removed)

Yes, you read that right. Today, I added something new and exciting to my juice. My husband is big on wraps and salads, so we always have peppers and onions in the house. I thought well, I'm not getting enough vegetables in my morning juice, so I added half of a sweet orange pepper.

There's no specific method to this juice, just toss it all in and push it through. This juice recipe makes approximately 16oz. and is the perfect blend of sweet, spicy and tangy.

I was really surprised at just how much I liked this juice. I am not a huge fan of peppers on their own, but know that there are some pretty awesome health benefits and nutrients in them (vitamin A and C, potassium) that are great for this stage of pregnancy. Right now, I'm having alot of restlesss leg syndrome, particularly late in the evening when the rest of my body is settling down. Potassium can certainly help with that, along with cramps from running.

SO YUMMY! I really hope this is one recipe that you try, and if you do...report back!! I love it and it certainly will become a staple in our house!
