Positive reinforcement does wonders for the fragile self esteem of a child. As a child, I was teased about my weight, short hair, glasses....you name it, I was called it. What my dad did to make me feel awesome was leave me little drawings and notes at the kitchen table (he was a shift worker). It made me feel like a million bucks, and the thought of his notes still makes me smile.
